Welcome to ChildCare Education Institute’s April 2007 newsletter!  This month CCEI discusses the importance of health and hygiene in the early childhood setting and steps which may be taken to ensure a healthy learning environment.

The spread of germs in the early childhood setting can be reduced by adding a few simple routines to your day to day operations. These routines include:

  • Effective hand washing
  • Proper diapering
  • Cleaning and disinfecting
  • Sanitizing bathrooms
  • Safe and proper toilet training procedures
  • Handling and preparing food in a sanitary manner

Pay close attention to areas in the classroom where germs can easily be spread and remember to thoroughly disinfect the areas on a regular basis. These areas include science centers, water play tables, dress-up clothing and garbage cans, just to name a few.

Healthy habits reduce the spread of illness. It is important to have a good and enforced health policy for both staff and children. The best way to reduce the spread of germs in the early childhood setting is effective hand washing.

Educate the children! If the children and adults practice healthy habits, fewer people will become ill.

PROPER PROCEDURES: PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF DISEASE IN INFANT AND TODDLER CLASSROOMS

Teachers of infants and toddlers come in contact with a variety of bodily fluids on a daily basis. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that they be trained in ways to protect their own health and the health of the children in their care. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA; Bloodborne Pathogens, 1992) has published guidelines for preventing the spread of bloodborne pathogens, such as AIDS and hepatitis. These guidelines define universal infection control precautions to be used in all child care programs to break the chain of transmission for bloodborne pathogens. Following these regulations has also been proven to prevent the spread of other communicable diseases. Read Article

CDA ASSESSMENT SCHOLARSHIP
CCEI announces a CDA Assessment Scholarship available to qualified students in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Texas. Students must enroll in a CCEI Online CDA Certificate program of study valued at $999 or greater between the dates of April 1, 2007 and June 30, 2007 to be eligible.

IDAHO
Scholarships are now available through Idaho AEYC for the CCEI 9 Hour College Credit Online CDA Certificate program of study through a dual-enrollment agreement with the College of Southern Idaho. Students must be legal residents of the state of Idaho and enrolled in the IdahoSTARS Professional Development Registry. Other eligibility criteria apply.

PENNSYLVANIA
Pennsylvania residents, interested in enrolling in the CCEI 6 Hour College Credit Online Instructor-Led CDA Certificate program of study, may be eligible for reimbursement of tuition costs through the Pennsylvania Keys Professional Development Voucher System. CCEI is an approved provider of professional development and CDA training by the PA Department of Welfare - Office of Child Development. Special financing options are available to eligible students.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE (CDA) CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
CCEI is an approved provider of Child Care professional development and the CDA Credential Coursework. We offer several program options, all online, including instructor supported, self-study, and college credit programs. The online Instructor Led Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate Program provides each student with an Education Coach, who is an experienced child care professional, to assist with coursework and applying for the credential.

For those who prefer self-study, the online Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate Program allows students to work independently on the coursework.

You can earn 120 hours or 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) which meet the coursework requirements of the CDA, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with our online access. A College Credit option for this course of study program is also available that can be articulated to an AA Degree in Early Childhood Education.

CDA RENEWAL
A CDA Credential is valid for three years from the date of the award, after which time it may be renewed for five year periods. CCEI offers the required professional development coursework for CDA Renewal Candidates.

CHILD CARE DIRECTOR'S CERTIFICATE
CCEI provides a specialized professional development credential for the child care director. Courses provide a concentrated study in the areas that must be mastered to be successful as a child care management team member. College credits are available when dual enrolled through University of Cincinnati.

ASSOCIATES DEGREE COLLEGE CREDIT PROGRAM ChildCare Education Institute (CCEI) has an articulation agreement with the University of Cincinnati to offer students the ability to pursue a college degree. Many CCEI courses are eligible for articulation to the University of Cincinnati Online Early Childhood Associate Degree.
